Fame and Reputation

The realm of fame and reputation is very strange. Our reputation is how other people see us from afar. It is how people perceive us without knowing us personally. It basically is an illusion and it is funny how our reputations can be manipulated for better or for worse. Fame, or being well-known, is something that most people try to achieve for egoic reasons. Sometimes also, fame is perceived to equal success, which is not always true. The domain of fame and reputation can be full of distortions and deceptions.

People who chase fame are usually unsuccessful in getting it; but people who do not care for it are granted fame. Those chasing fame for the wrong reasons, like for money greed or narcissistic supply, will eventually feel the dark side of fame. Meanwhile, people who just do things that they ought to do, like Jesus Christ and Buddha, were chased by fame because of their large contribution to humanity. They do not feel a great need for fame, but their fame from ancient times up to this day has enabled them to do their purpose more efficiently.

Famous people are either put on a pedestal or burned at stakes, figuratively speaking. Fame is neither good nor bad, but it is an amplifier. When someone is put on a pedestal, he or she receives large amounts of love. And when someone is burned at a stake, he or she painfully receives the hatred of the whole world. It doesn’t matter whether the love or the hatred received is deserved or undeserved. Famous people need to be mentally strong in order to not get affected by the different kinds of energy thrown at them. People who are envious of famous people do not fully understand the fact that fame can be some kind of a prison; and the glamour and glitters are only an illusion.

Some people acquire fame for their beauty and talent, like Marilyn Monroe and Britney Spears for example. They are sex symbols and beauty icons. However, why is it that these two are miserable? Beauty, fame, and a reputation of being universally desirable does not grant happiness. In fact, they make someone prone to attract sexual predators or people who want to take advantage of what they have. Most beautiful women who are labeled by others to have “pretty privilege” also experience the not-so-nice effects of their beauty and fame. Envy from other people can also make them feel isolated and unhappy.

However, this article does not discourage anyone from trying to attain fame and beauty, if they feel that these will enhance their lives. Fame can be good for business; and beauty can be good for attracting friends, lovers, and helpful people around you. My point here is that we should try to have more sympathy for famous people, since their “perfect” lives are usually for appearances only. And sometimes, evil hides behind a good reputation, and good is covered by a bad reputation. We are currently living in a world full of deception.

When we are given the gift of fame and beauty, we must use them for good. Fame gives great power to the person who has it. One perfect example of using fame in a good way is Angeline Jolie. She uses what she has to help others; and her fame, being an amplifier of her humanitarian deeds, sets a good example to other people to do the same. The universe continues to bless those who use their power, status, and fame for the betterment of the world. And when enough famous people use their fame for goodness instead of evil, it will create a cycle of goodness and blessings which will quicken the spiritual progress of our planet.
